November 18, 2002—The US General Services Administration (GSA) has awarded a contract to transform GSA’s Web portal, www.GSA.gov, into an effective marketing tool for GSA. The contract was awarded to Bates Worldwide and its interactive partner, 141XM of New York City, for $930,000.
The Web site redesign will include simplifying the organizational structure of the site, focusing content on GSA products and services, and providing information that is most often requested by GSA customers. Contractor recommendations will be based on user surveys and other market research tools.
GSA says that this approach is consistent with President Bush’s Management Agenda, which calls for a government that is citizen-centered, result-oriented, and market-based. Also, by making the site more navigable and information easier for customers to find, GSA says it is helping other federal agencies save tax dollars in travel, rent, building maintenance, and on everything agencies use from furniture to technology to telecommunications.
GSA, a centralized federal procurement and property management agency created by Congress to improve government efficiency and help federal agencies better serve the public, acts as a catalyst for nearly $66 billion in federal spending—more than one-fourth of the federal government’s total procurement dollars. GSA influences the management of federal assets valued at nearly $500 billion.
