July 28, 2008—Haworth, Inc., announced that it has joined the US Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay Transport Program, a nationwide initiative designed to promote cleaner, more fuel-efficient and environmentally responsible transportation options. Haworth’s participation pertains to utilizing more energy-efficient methods for bringing its products to market.
As a SmartWay Transport Partner, Haworth met a minimum target of 50 percent of shipments, by weight, carried by SmartWay transport carrier partners. Carriers in the program commit to improving their freight-carrying operations, in part by quantifying their environmental performance and setting fuel efficiency goals. Two of Haworth’s top ten carriers already are certified participants, and Haworth is urging others to join the program.
Haworth’s SmartWay membership also required an action plan that includes a no idling policy for carriers on Haworth property; increasing intermodal (rail/truck) shipments for long distance deliveries; recruiting more carrier partners into the SmartWay program; and incorporating partnership status into the company’s new carrier prequalification process. In addition, education and promotional programs are planned to build awareness and brand recognition among Haworth members (i.e. employees) and the general public.
The EPA SmartWay Transport Partnership brings together shippers, carriers, government agencies and others to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, improve fuel efficiency, and strengthen the freight sector.
