April 13, 2026 — Once again, the jobs report took an unexpected turn, rising to 178,000 in March 2026, a reversal from the 133,000 decline in February, and far better than the 59,000 job gain that was predicted by the Dow Jones.
Notably, the boom in healthcare positions continues with the sector adding 76,000 jobs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Employment in ambulatory healthcare services rose by 54,000, reflecting an increase of 35,000 in offices of physicians as workers returned from a strike. Employment also increased in hospitals (+15,000). Over the prior 12 months, healthcare had added an average of 29,000 jobs per month.
Of the 76,400 healthcare positions filled, the vast majority were concentrated in ambulatory health care services, which added 54,000 roles, according to Financial Content. A significant portion of this growth — roughly 35,000 jobs — stemmed from physician offices as workers returned following a series of high-profile labor disputes and strikes earlier in the year. Hospitals added a steady 15,000 jobs, while nursing and residential care facilities contributed 7,200, highlighting the persistent pressure to staff long-term care for an aging population.
The unemployment rate changed little at 4.3 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on April 4. Job gains also occurred in construction, transportation and warehousing. Federal government employment continued to decline. Specifically in March, transportation and warehousing added 21,000 jobs, reflecting a gain in couriers and messengers (+20,000). Overall, employment in transportation and warehousing is down by 139,000 since reaching a peak in February 2025.
