May 29, 2006—The Green Gown Awards have been announced by the Higher Education–Environmental Performance Improvement (HEEPI) project, funded under the Leadership, Governance, and Management initiative of the Higher Education Funding Council for England. The Green Gown Awards were established to raise awareness of the growing pressures for better environmental performance by UK universities and colleges, and to recognize positive responses to them. The 2005 awards are as follows:
- Energy & Water Efficiency: Winner – Sheffield Hallam University Highly Commended – University of Plymouth
- Innovation: Winner – University of Bradford Highly Commended – Sussex University Students Union Environmental Society Highly Commended – University of Hertfordshire
- Smaller Institutions: Winner – Harper Adams University College Highly Commended – York St. John University College Students Union
- Sustainable Construction: Winner – University of York Highly Commended – University of Southampton
- Sustainable Procurement: Winner – University of Glasgow Highly Commended – Queen’s University of Belfast
- Transport: Winner – Bournemouth University Highly Commended – University of Gloucestershire Highly Commended – Edge Hill College of Higher Education
- Waste: Winner – University of Leeds Highly Commended – University of Derby
