Herman Miller wins Social Security’s sole-source contract

December 7, 2001—The Social Security Administration (SSA) has awarded Herman Miller a sole-source contract to provide workspace management services and products necessary to implement and maintain 800 SSA field offices. These offices are SSA’s touch point to the public and require functionality, security, and consistency in order to serve the public efficiently. The contract has an estimated value of $93 million over its 10-year duration.

Earlier, in September 1995, Herman Miller received a contract from SSA to design, manufacture and install furnishings at 800 SSA field office sites in the U.S. and its territories and possessions. The contract was the largest order in the company’s then 72-year history. The original award, now completed, involved building approximately 20,000 workstations to upgrade SSA’s outdated workplaces.

Now SSA is looking to Herman Miller to continue this valued relationship through a partnering agreement designed to take full advantage of the management expertise and operational efficiencies of both parties through the application of Herman Miller’s reconfiguration and relocation services. This is necessary in order for SSA to provide the most efficient and effective environments for its employees and customers.
