HID proximity cards integrated with long-distance Automatic Vehicle ID Reader

January 29, 2003—HID Corp., the largest manufacturer of contactless access control readers and cards for the security industry, and NEDAP, a radio frequency identification technology manufacturer, have introduced proximity card-enabled Automatic Vehicle Identification Reader (AVI) technology.

This new dual ID, long-distance, high-speed AVI system integrates HID proximity cards with an in-vehicle mounted “Combi-Booster.” The 2.45 gigahertz transmitter securely transmits both the driver’s proximity serial ID number and an embedded vehicle ID simultaneously.

Extending the read range of a proximity card up to 33 feet, the new AVI system can be read at vehicle speeds of up to 125 miles per hour. The system can be configured to provide hands-free vehicle access to gated and secured areas, without the need to come to a stop. Eliminating the need to stop enables convenient and secure access for authorized vehicles and driver.

The technology can be used for applications such as automated parking payment, airport and seaport security, and automated toll collections.
