In a recent letter, six higher education associations urged the Federal Communications Commission to exempt college and university dormitory housing from proposed regulations that call for multi-tenant residential buildings to permit a variety of telephone carriers to offer and provide service to building residents. Left unchanged, the regulations would allow unlimited access to campus dorms by service providers.
According to the letter, there are several potential problems with a rule prohibiting exclusive access arrangements between a college or university and a telecommunications service provider, including concerns about cost, security, and conflict with state telecommunications policies.
