Homeland Security focuses on transportation centers after London attacks

July 13, 2005—After the terror attacks in London, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) raised the terrorism threat level from Code Yellow—or Elevated—to Code Orange—or High—targeted only to the mass transit portion of the US transportation sector.

US building owners and operators with facilities or properties located above or adjacent to major rail centers, subway stations, and other mass transit centers should be more cognizant of the environments and exercise increased vigilance in monitoring these facilities, says DHS.

In particular, DHS officials encouraged building owners and managers to communicate with local law enforcement, including transit and station masters, regarding appropriate protective steps. Communication and coordination of efforts are critical, DHS officials say, to ensure the best use of collective resources as security is heightened and additional protective measures are undertaken by the public and private sectors.

DHS asks the public to remain alert and to report any suspicious activity. For more information, visit the Web site of the Department of Homeland Security.
