HON Company wins five-year Blanket Purchase Agreement to sell furniture to U.S. Navy

May 4, 2011—The U.S. Navy has awarded The HON Company a five-year Blanket Purchase Agreement (BPA), effective June 1, 2011, making HON the only commercial manufacturer authorized to sell to the Department of the Navy in all five furniture categories and in all 50 U.S. states plus Puerto Rico, Guam and other destinations where the Navy has facilities and furnishings needs, according to the company.

The furniture categories awarded include: furniture systems and workstation clusters; worksurfaces, workstations, computer furniture and accessories; filing and storage cabinets; executive office furniture; and, multipurpose seating.

In other news, now more than 80% of The HON Company’s portfolio of products has been awarded BIFMA level 2 certification. The level 1 is soon expected to be adopted as the environmental certification minimum standard for furniture by the General Services Administration (GSA), according to Jean Reynolds, The HON Company’s vice president of strategic development for government markets.

“This certification, which was issued by Scientific Certification Systems, an independent third-party testing and review source, puts HON ahead of the curve, well above the minimum certification expected, and past much of our competition,” said Reynolds.

Both pieces of news come as The HON Company prepares for its appearance at GSA Expo in San Diego, May 10-12, where the manufacturer will be exhibiting in Space #1029.

In addition to evaluating the sustainability of an individual product, the level 2 accreditation also assesses the supply chain, manufacturing site and corporation to ensure all stages of a company’s business practices uphold the rigorous criteria developed by BIFMA.

The categories in which HON products earned the level 2 certification were: seating, laminate casegoods, steel desks, steel storage, and systems workstations.

The HON Company is a leading designer and manufacturer of workplace furniture including chairs, storage, panel systems, tables and desks, with headquarters in Muscatine, Iowa, and numerous manufacturing facilities throughout the U.S. For more information, see the Web site.
