October 31, 2005—Honeywell announced recently that its work with the Southwest Licking School District in Etna, Ohio, has been recognized by School Planning & Management magazine and the Council of Educational Facility Planners International (CEFPI) as a winner of an “Impact on Learning Award.”
The award honors construction and renovation projects that solve real-world problems in education through innovative design, engineering, and technology.
Honeywell Building Solutions and Southwest Licking Schools received recognition in the “high performance/green buildings” category for implementing an energy-conservation project that enabled the district to fund critical repairs and improve the learning environment without raising operating budgets.
The facility improvements—performed under a 15-year energy savings performance contract (ESPC) with Honeywell—included upgrades to building controls; heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment; and water and lighting systems.
In addition, Honeywell put in a photovoltaic solar panel at the district’s middle school as part of the project. The solar installation includes monitoring equipment that continuously streams data to science classroom computers, allowing more than 250 science students to witness how solar energy is created.
Along with this award, the district’s work towards energy efficiency, renewable energy, and energy education led to a Rebuild America EnergySmart Schools partnership award from the US Department of Energy. As a result of the DOE recognition, the district now has access to a network of professionals who can give advice on facilities improvement issues to further reduce energy usage and operating costs.
