The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) began a campaign in April 2001 encouraging employers to choose carefully when buying or hiring handheld power tools, because of the health risks from vibration. In support of the campaign, it is publishing a new leaflet, containing straightforward guidance on how to make the best choice.
HSE plans to distribute the leaflet, called “Power tools: how to reduce vibration health risks,” to employers’ organizations and trade unions. In addition, HSE inspectors will be visiting employers where handheld power tools are heavily used, looking at how the risks are being managed and at company policies for tool replacement.
Long-term exposure to hand-arm vibration from using handheld power tools such as concrete breakers, chainsaws, grinders, and chipping hammers is known to cause a range of diseases including vibration white finger, carpal tunnel syndrome, sensory nerve damage, and muscle and joint damage of the hands and arms.
Free single copies or priced packs of fifteen of “Power tools: how to reduce vibration health risks” can be ordered online.
