According to a report in workplacelaw.net, new figures show that asbestos is still present in 85% of UK commercial properties (around 850,000 buildings), as well as in many homes and apartments. There are no legal requirements for owners to keep records of asbestos used in properties, thus endangering workers who are renovating or converting buildings that contain asbestos.
AsbestosRegister.com has launched a national asbestos register to reduce these risks. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has also published a new guide to asbestos management, aimed at employers, contract managers, site agents, safety representatives, and self-employed maintenance contractors, to help ensure the health and safety of workers who may be exposed to asbestos. For information on ordering HSE Guidance—Introduction to asbestos essentials, call HSE Books at (01787) 881165.
