ICC, International Association of Fire Chiefs study nightclub tragedies to improve safety

March 7, 2003—The International Code Council (ICC) and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) have agreed to develop an effective strategy to address concerns raised by the recent series of nightclub tragedies.

“Together, we can fully study the circumstances of these tragic events, review building code and fire safety concerns relevant to public assembly, and identify ways to improve safety where large numbers of people gather. In addition, we are currently assisting local, state, and federal agencies with their ongoing investigations, and we are committed to using our professional resources and expertise to make buildings safer for everyone,” commented ICC Chief Executive Officer Bob D. Heinrich.

The ICC develops the codes used to construct residential and commercial buildings, including schools. The majority of U.S. cities, counties, and states that adopt codes choose building and fire safety codes developed by the ICC.

IAFC represents 12,000 fire chiefs and emergency officers, providing information and services from fire fighting and emergency medical response to hazardous material spills, terrorism response, and public safety legislation.
