ICx MesoSystems biological threat sensor wins innovation award

October 16, 2006—ICx MesoSystems’ AirSentinel biological threat sensor is a 2006 R&D 100 award winner. The award was given by the trade journal R&D Magazine for ranking among the top 100 industrial innovations worldwide for 2006.

Functionally similar to a smoke alarm, AirSentinel is an affordable approach to biological threat detection for buildings, says the company. The AirSentinel is a continuously operating sensor that detects potentially harmful airborne biological threats. Since biological threats are not detectable by human senses, aerosolized threats may incubate and spread unbeknownst to those who inhale the threat. Rather than wait for those exposed to exhibit symptoms, the AirSentinel enables near-real-time detection, says MesoSystems. This early warning enables remediation that can limit both illness and facility contamination.

According to MesoSystems, applications for the sensor include building management, subways and airports, mailrooms and mail distribution facilities, hospitals and other healthcare facilities, schools and educational institutions, military, and more.
