IFMA and BOMA report provides new floor measurement standard

February 11, 2008—Until now, the lack of a standardized measurement system to determine floor area in office buildings has caused headaches and unnecessary costs for facility managers and their strategic partners who had to separately produce both sets of measurements.

A new measurement system that harmonizes the IFMA and BOMA systems has been approved, and the finalized report is now available from the IFMA bookstore.

A Unified Approach for Measuring Office Space, For Use in Facility and Property Management, created by IFMA and BOMA, provides a new taxonomy classification system and procedures that will allow users to measure different categories of floor area in a building once and calculate the results using either the IFMA or BOMA area measurement standard.

The report also contains commentaries and detailed drawings to demonstrate the principal concepts.
