A recent survey of IFMA members concerning the impact of its World Workplace conference illustrated the buying power of IFMA members. Slightly more than half of those surveyed said they are the final decision-maker for purchases of contract furnishings and floor coverings, while over half of those who are not said the decision still comes from within the facilities department. The average amount that survey respondents spent on contract furnishings in the last year was about $540,000, which should increase to about $550,000 in the next twelve months. Twelve percent spent more than a million dollars on furnishings last year, and the same percentage expects to spend that much in the coming months. For floor coverings, respondents spent an average of just over $200,000 in the past 12 months. Two percent said they spent more than $1 million on floor coverings in that period, and three percent expect to spend that much in the coming months.
Respondents said they have purchased and/or intend to purchase furniture from Steelcase (51.6 percent), Herman Miller (40.4 percent), Haworth (27.5 percent), Knoll (19.7 percent), KI (11.2 percent), and Teknion (10.5 percent). For floor covering, respondents report they have purchased and/or intend to purchase from Shaw (23.7 percent), Interface (23.5 percent), Milliken (22.8 percent), Lees Carpets (13.8 percent), Collins & Aikman (11.7 percent), and Mannington (11.7 percent). IFMA has approximately 17,600 members worldwide. The combined purchasing power of IFMA’s North American members is $64 billion annually.
