International Facility Management Association presented its annual Awards of Excellence during a festive banquet at World Workplace 2000, held recently in New Orleans.
Recipients recognized for their accomplishments in the field of facilities management are:
- Distinguished Member Award: Sharon Harrington, CFM, facility services manager for Medtronics, Minneapolis, for 15 years of service to IFMA in a variety of roles, both on the international and local chapter levels.
- Distinguished Author Award: Bill Conley, CFM, VeriFone facility manager, for the article “Interview with an FM,” published in IFMA’s Facility Management Journal.
- Distinguished Author Award: Versar Inc., managing author Tom Schroder, for the book Environmental Health & Safety Issues.
- Distinguished Educator Award: Jeffery L. Campbell, PhD, assistant professor in the facility management program, Brigham Young University.
- Golden Circles Award honored the facilities development department of Pioneer Hi-Bred International, presented to Marcia Nyberg, CFM, IIDA, facility development project manager, and Dick Gosselink, director of facility development.
Awards were also given to chapters for their distinguished achievements:
- Atlanta Chapter was recognized for its focus on retention and membership marketing, education-based newsletter, professional development programs and community service activities including the master’s degree FM program at Georgia Tech. The chapter’s president J. Joyce Roper, facilities manager for Coca-Cola Enterprises in Atlanta, accepted the award.
- Central Ohio Chapter was cited for its Web Communication in a medium-sized chapter category; for providing information to its members via the Internet. The chapter’s webmaster, Mike Leder, accepted the award.
- Denver Chapter wins for Membership Marketing, for surpassing its goal of 10% increase in membership; accepted by chapter’s VP Walt Doderer.
- Deutschland Chapter for excellence in membership marketing for a medium-sized chapter; for creating a new identity and professional look for its marketing brochures and other materials; accepted by Paul Stadloder, CFM.
- Houston Chapter won three awards in the large chapter category, for Newsletter Publishing, Professional Development, and tied with the Seattle Chapter for Web Communications.
- Seattle Chapter tied for Web Communications (with the Houston Chapter); presented to John R. Benny, CFM.
- Indianapolis Chapter received the award for excellence in educational programming in the medium-sized chapter category; accepted by chapter VP Norm Smiley, PE, CFM.
- Regina Chapter received the award for excellence in educational programming in the small chapter category; accepted by immediate past president Donald R. Holmes.
- San Antonio Chapter was cited for community service, supporting students with a scholarship program and Texas A&M’s newly developed FM program; accepted by chapter president, Jack Norton.
- Silicon Valley Chapter (large chapter category), for excellence in educational programming, focusing on cutting-edge topics; accepted by chapter’s educational co-chair Judy Cooper.
- Associate Member Award went to Jennifer Corbett-Shramo, member of the Orange County Chapter and employed by Pacific Building Care, for recruiting new members; finding jobs for existing members, and coordinating a community outreach program.
- Student Chapter of the Year went to Brigham Young University, for increasing membership 88 percent; accepted by chapter president Brad Cowley.
Four members were inducted into the IFMA College of Fellows. They are:
- Mary Day Gauer, CFM, New Mexico Chapter.
- Dr. Walther Moslener, CFM, of the Deutschland Chapter.
- Arvid Stonkus, publisher, Canadian Facility Management & Design magazine, Toronto.
- Carroll Thatcher, CFM, principal, Carroll Thatcher Planning Group, Ottawa.
The IFMA Foundation awarded $23,000 scholarships to 15 students of facility management at a reception and luncheon during World Workplace 2000. Further details are available at www.ifma.org.
