The International Facility Management Association (IFMA) published the results of its 1998 survey, which showed that the average total compensation for facility managers jumped 18% in the previous four years, from $58,800 to $69,407. The report is based on a survey of 4,400 facility management professionals during the spring of 1998 and updates IFMA’s member profile conducted in 1994. Other findings were:
- Base salaries ranged from $20,000 per year to more than $200,000
- 59% were eligible for bonuses, 15% more than in the 1994 study
- The median base salary was $60,000 with an average of $63,840; the previous survey showed a median base of $53,500 and the average of $56,300.
- Specialists, individual contributors and facility management professionals with no supervisory levels or subordinates reporting to them, had a 31% increase in total compensation in the last 4 years, the most dramatic change
- Survey respondents averaged 23 years of total work experience, 11 of which were in facilities. Nearly 25% of department heads had engineering or construction backgrounds prior to working in facility management.
Trends in facility management include:
- Skill sets such as communications and problem-solving will become a prerequisite for facility managers’ advancement.
- Hiring managers will look for facility personnel with more experience in financial analysis, real estate, and strategic planning
- Corporate real estate, facility management, information technology and telecommunications will eventually be combined into one workplace support service.
- Technology will provide the flexibility to experiment with alternative workplace strategies so that people will increasingly be able to work anywhere.
- Face-to-face contact, however, in business centers and head offices will remain important.
