“In an unusual partnership, Niagara Falls school is 21st century civic centerpiece”

A new school for the City of Niagara Falls is the first privately financed, privately managed school construction project completed in New York State. The result of a partnership between the City of Niagara Falls and its Board of Education with Honeywell and The Hillier Group, the new school for 2,350 students replaces two aging high schools and incorporates the latest technological advancements—without raising taxes.

The school is designed to be a technological statement for the 21st century and a civic centerpiece that reflects the ideas, aspirations, and educational philosophy of the people it serves. Says Carmen Granto, school superintendent, “We have done what is best for kids and, in the process, produced a jewel for the betterment of the entire community.”

The building was designed by architecture firm The Hillier Group, which drew inspiration from the power and natural beauty of the famous nearby falls. The 400,300-sq.ft. (37,200 sq.m.), $64 million Niagara Falls High School consists of four, four-story academic houses, or “schools within a school.” At the center of the complex is a Technology Core, a 2.5-story atrium housing the Center for Information with a library and a naturally lit, open research area.
