April 29, 2005—Understanding the potential workplace hazards and risks facing employees is the most important element in effectively managing occupational safety and health, according to a recent Internet opinion poll from the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE).
Nearly 37 percent of poll participants said that knowing the potential hazards facing workers is most important, while 32.5 percent responded that convincing the workforce to act in a safe manner is the most important in effectively managing safety.
The method of establishing clear-cut and achievable safety goals received 17 percent from participants, and 11.4 percent viewed appreciation of the workplace culture, especially senior management, as a key element. A total of 5,356 people participated in the web-based poll.
