August 26, 2002—A five-year contract signed by Indus International and Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. provides a hosted PassPort solution to give 3,200 named users, primarily at 20 Containerboard Mill Division (CMD) plants across the US and Canada.
The new hosted model will give Smurfit-Stone access to the latest PassPort functionality, as well as the flexibility to meet ongoing changes within its company by adding further functionality as needed, without the capital investment to license the software, according to Smurfit-Stone. The company also claims that this model not only gives it almost immediate access to new PassPort features when they are needed, but it also provides a lower total cost of ownership for the solution.
Smurfit-Stone points to numerous reasons for implementing the hosted PassPort model. Among them is the desire to accelerate a planned upgrade from PassPort 6.0 to PassPort 9.0 at the five plants with existing PassPort implementations. The company also wanted to streamline the rollout of the solution to the CMD’s remaining 15 sites, as well as users at others divisions. To help meet these requirements, the solution will be hosted by Indus Partner Digex, a leading managed hosting provider for business on the Internet.
Among the hosted alternatives provided is a disaster recovery solution, points out Smurfit-Stone. It says that even in the event of a catastrophic loss at the primary hosting location, its business will be ensured of continuity and a high level of application uptime.
