November 24, 2004—International Rectifier (IR), a global provider of power management technology, announced November 18 that its Newport, Wales, facility has won another energy efficiency award in the UK, this time given by the ARENA Network in Wales. ARENA honored IR Newport with its Best Use of Energy in Business Award for their “outstanding efforts to develop and promote best practices in environmental management systems for business.”
IR Newport’s Facilities Director Stuart Langdon said, “Since acquiring the site in 2002, we have worked diligently to reduce our annual energy consumption by 25% while increasing production volumes by more than 70%. One important step taken in 2003 was to institute an automated, activity-based, energy use monitoring and targeting system. The system has allowed us to detect and avoid energy waste as well as reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Initial detection of avoidable waste reduced the site’s carbon dioxide emissions by 170 tonnes per month and carbon dioxide emissions are continually being reduced. We thank ARENA Network for the honor and the opportunity to share best practices with our colleagues in the industry.”
ARENA Network is an independent organization that works with industry and government to further the development and adoption of best practices in environmental management and training-related issues. The group works in partnership with the National Assembly for Wales, Welsh Development Agency, the Environment Agency Wales, and local authorities.
