Irish offices to be smoke-free zone

February 7, 2003—The Irish Government has announced plans for a total ban on smoking in the workplace.

The ban, which will also extend to pubs, restaurants and nightclubs, is intended to protect employees who are currently subjected to unhealthy levels of cigarette smoke.

Michael Martin, Irish minister for health and children, says there is overwhelming public support for banning smoking in public places, even amongst smokers. “Current ventilation technologies are inadequate to give workers full protection from the hazards of tobacco smoke,” Martin said.
