ISO 9000 quality standards revitalized for 2000

The ISO 9000 series of quality standards is being relaunched for 2000, with improvements to make the standards clearer and more accessible. ISO 9000 has helped 350,000 organizations worldwide become more productive and profitable since the International Organization for Standardization established the standards 20 years ago. Now the British Standards Institution (BSI) has revitalized the standards, which it says will be driven by customer satisfaction.

ISO 9000: 2000 intends to involve top company management as well as everyone else in the organization, as part of the central strategy of teaming human motivation with business objectives in the pursuit of common goals. While retaining much of the current standards, the new standards change the focus from procedures to the interacting processes involved in production, which BSI says are at the heart of any business. A new section on resource management will support the other standards.
