ISO New England Inc., the operator of New England’s bulk electric power grid, stated in May that there should be a sufficient supply of electricity to meet New England’s energy needs this summer, despite predictions of record-setting demand.
The company bases its projection on several new power plants that have been built over the past two years, adding 1,000 megawatts to the grid, and another 1,600 megawatts that are expected to be online this summer. In addition, about 1,500 megawatts of electricity is typically available from Hydro-Quebec in Canada.
Still, the company admits that there may be a few days this summer when customers could be asked to enact temporary energy conservation measures during peak demand hours.
