Italian architect wins commission to design new home for New York Times

The New York Times will be adding a “gossamer vision” to the Manhattan skyline with a new headquarters skyscraper by Renzo Piano, noted for many architectural achievements including his co-design of Centre Pompidou in Paris. Planned for Eighth Avenue between 40th and 41st Streets, the towering structure will rise about 45 stories from a broad base. The Times would occupy the lower floors taking up half of the building; the balance would be rented to tenants.

Actual design of the building will take about a year. Fox and Fowle, New York, is the associate architect. The commission was won by a competition that consisted of four other internationally acclaimed architects besides Mr. Piano.
