Jarvis has strengthened its position in the UK education facilities management market with the award of a 230 million schools Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contract in London as well as the opening of a new project for university accommodation. The PFI contract to upgrade and maintain eight schools was awarded by the London Borough of Haringey to Jarvis Projects, a subsidiary of Jarvis plc. Jarvis will provide the design, construction/refurbishment, and financing for the eight schools, as well as FM services for the next 25 years. With these eight new schools, the total that Jarvis is responsible for across the UK is now up to 56 schools, with 60,000 students.
Jarvis’ other recent accomplishment was the opening of a new, privately funded residence hall built and financed by Jarvis Projects through its University Partnerships Programme for the University of Reading. There are 384 study bedrooms in the new Reading Student Village, allowing the University to accommodate over half of its full-time students, whereas most UK universities can house only 20-25% of their students. The three new buildings surround a landscaped meadow and pond area. Each building contains a number of six-bedroom apartments with communal kitchen/dining facilities. An existing 18th century farmhouse was also renovated. The University sees the project as “a model of how the private and public sectors can work together effectively.”
