November 2, 2007—Retail giant JC Penney Company recently opened 22 new stores, on its way to delivering 50 new stores in 2007, with one location piloting a number of “green” building features.
According to JCPenney, the new stores incorporate a variety of features designed to make the shopping experience more enjoyable and efficient, as well as to save energy through a series of initiatives that the company is pursuing nationwide.
The JCPenney store at The Shops at Northfield Stapleton in Denver, CO, is piloting green building features, including LED lighting on signs, 100 percent recycled carpet, water-saving plumbing fixtures and appliances, local sourcing of materials, and recycling of construction waste.
JCPenney says that all of its newly built stores are equipped with energy management systems, high-efficiency HVAC systems, R20-rated insulating white roof systems, and high-efficiency lighting, and all are commissioned by certified engineers to ensure they are constructed and operated for peak energy efficiency.
