March 9, 2026 — By now you know the February jobs report was unexpectedly bleak, as U.S. businesses slowed hiring, resulting in the loss of 92,000 jobs, revealed the Bureau of Labor Statistics on March 6.
Economists expected the U.S. to add 60,000 new jobs in February, following gains made in January largely due to growth in the health care sector. However, health care actually lost 28,000 jobs, partially attributed to nurses striking on both the East and West Coasts. Further, the Bureau also revised December’s reported gain of 48,000 jobs to a loss of 17,000 jobs, and reduced the 130,000 job gain reported in January to 126,000. Further, the February unemployment rate notched up to 4.4% from 4.3%.
Like the economists, we cannot predict what March will bring, but more information/tech sector job losses will be attributed to adoption of AI and a reduction in overall tech hiring, the economic impact of the war in Iran, and the resulting surge in oil prices that will impact hiring related to energy.
The construction sector, along with mining, manufacturing, financial and retail held steady. Perhaps medical office building renovation and hospital expansions are keeping pace.
