March 13, 2002—Johnson Controls has placed among the top 10 companies overall in three categories on the latest FORTUNE magazine “America’s Most Admired Companies” list. The survey appears in FORTUNE’s March 4, 2002 edition.
Of the 530 companies in the study, Johnson Controls ranked fourth overall for “Quality of Management.” It was ranked 10th overall for “Innovativeness” and 10th overall for “Employee Talent.”
In addition, the company’s average score across the eight survey categories was 7.89, representing the 10th highest overall rating of all the companies in the survey. Last year, the company had an average score of 7.39—the 53rd highest rating.
To compile the lists, the Hay Group, an independent consulting firm, asked 10,000 executives, directors and securities analysts to rate companies in their own industries based on eight key criteria. The 10 largest companies by revenue in 58 industries were included in the study. Companies were ranked on innovation, financial soundness, employee talent, use of corporate assets, long-term investment value, social responsibility, quality of management, and quality of products and services.
