Johnson Controls expands security solutions for healthcare facilities

April 16, 2003—Johnson Controls is expanding its security solutions with several offerings from Xmark designed to protect infants, wandering patients, medical personnel, and important mobile assets in healthcare environments. Xmark, a provider of tracking and monitoring products for the healthcare and security markets, is a division of Instantel Inc.

The Hugs Infant Protection system is designed to detect when infants have been removed from a facility without authorization. A small tag worn by the infant contains a radio transmitter that will lock doors or sound an alarm if the infant is moved outside of the protected area or if the tag is tampered with. In addition, the Hugs system can be used to electronically match the infant’s tag to a tag worn by the infant’s mother. This protects against both transfer errors while in the hospital and discharge of the infant to the wrong family.

The WatchMatch system uses similar technology to immediately detect when a resident or patient suffering from Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia leaves a longer-term care or nursing facility.

The FindIt Asset Tracking system uses a combination of infrared beacons and radio frequency receivers to monitor, locate and protect important mobile assets such as intravenous pumps and defibrillators.

The MyCall Emergency Response system applies the same basic technology as FindIt to locate key medical personnel and provide personal duress notification.

These solutions will be available through the Johnson Controls network of more than 500 branches worldwide.
