July 11, 2003—Seattle-Tacoma International Airport has engaged Johnson Controls, Inc., to upgrade and expand its security systems. Among systems to be upgraded are non-passenger access control, closed-circuit television, intercom, data network, digital video recording, and an identification badging database. The equipment will be integrated through the Cardkey P20000R redundant security management system.
The new access control system for the nearly 18,000 airport employees will feature the latest in biometric reader and smart card technologies. Employees’ finger images will be recorded and encoded on smart card identity badges. A device at secure entrances will compare the image on an employee’s smart card to the fingerprint placed on the reader, and signal the P2000 to permit access if the match is successful.
The $13.8 million systems and installation contract is part of a $3 billion overall expansion and improvement program for the airport. Johnson Controls will serve as the overall systems integrator on the project, ensuring efficiency and synergy for upgrades to existing security systems and installations in the new concourse and central terminal.
“The level of airport security will not be compromised at any time while Johnson Controls upgrades the existing systems. And when the project is complete, our facility will surpass current performance and efficiency standards,” said Arif Ghouse, security manager at Sea-Tac.
