October 18, 2002—Advanced technology systems from Johnson Controls will keep passengers comfortable while reducing energy and operations costs at the new American Airlines terminal under construction at New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. Johnson Controls has worked with American Airlines since the 1980s, and has a security system already in use at JFK International, in the British Airways terminal.
A Johnson Controls Metasys building automation system will control the terminal’s heating and cooling systems and integrate with its fire alarm system, moving walkways, escalators, elevators, lighting systems, and emergency generators as well as an automated equipment maintenance management system. Metasys Data Visualization, a technique that displays vast amounts of building systems data on a single screen, will enable facility management personnel to proactively manage changing building conditions.
Johnson Controls is responsible for installing the building control and fire systems and serves as first tier contractor to VRH/Torcon, Englewood, NJ, the project construction manager for American Airlines. The value of the Johnson Controls contract is approximately $20 million. It is anticipated the systems will help the carrier save millions of dollars in energy and operating costs over the life of the project.
The terminal redevelopment project is expected to cost $1.3 billion and when completed, will be JFK’s largest terminal. To control this large and complex facility, the Metasys system will monitor or control 20,000 different points.
