July 28, 2003—Improving the learning environment, saving money, and enhancing curriculum are aims of the contract awarded to Johnson Controls by the Northgate School District. Involved in the district are two elementary schools and one middle/high school.
Under the performance contract, the improvements will be financed over 10 years by utility cost savings generated by the project. Northgate School District expects to save more than $1.6 million for the school district. The avoided carbon dioxide emissions of the next 10 years is projected to be more than 1.3 million pounds, the equivalent of planting 187 acres of trees.
To achieve the guaranteed savings, Johnson Controls started making numerous facility improvements in July 2002. A Metasys building automation system was installed to monitor the chilled and hot water supply, air handling systems, and chillers. In addition, the school’s lighting and bathrooms were all retrofitted to reduce electricity, water, and sewage use. The school will experience further energy and operational savings through kitchen equipment replacement, vending machine operation monitoring, and installation of a swimming pool cover. The project will be completed mid-2003.
