January 28, 2004—Gerald R. Ford International Airport, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, has contracted with Johnson Controls to provide an integrated security system and network upgrades. The upgrades will help the airport comply with emerging government standards and regulations for airport security access control systems.

The $2.6 million contract includes the installation and integration of a card access control system serving approximately 2,200 employees, and an advanced closed circuit television system with digital video recording. The new access control system features smart card technology, but can be configured as needed to accommodate biometric technology. Completion date: October 2004. The system is capable of incorporating additional security technologies in the future.

The systems will be integrated through the Johnson Controls Cardkey P2000R security management system, enabling airport personnel to monitor and control all electronic security devices at any time from one main command center. The P2000R offers a redundancy feature that provides hardware and software failure detection for increased reliability. If a system failure occurs, explains Johnson Controls, it will be automatically detected and the function will switch over to the remote back-up system.
