July 7, 2026 – The labor market grew less than expected in June, with employers adding 57,000 new positions and unemployment dropping lower to 4.2 percent, as hiring continues. However, the Labor Department revised down the healthier job gains in April and May by 74,000, indicating the labor market was weaker than previously thought this spring. In effect, April’s job count was 148,000 (not 179,000) and May’s figure was 129,000 (not 172,000).
Last month, some economists had declared a rebound in the jobs market after several months of strong hiring, but that point of view may turn around if the numbers prove lower than was initially reported.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics released its June report on July 2, ahead of the holiday weekend for the 4th. Professional and business services added 36,000 positions, improving over the 2025 numbers.
The warm weather nationwide in May contributed to an earlier hiring season for leisure-industry jobs, so those numbers decreased in June. Positions were filled in May for temporary summer and World Cup hiring . . . and just maybe Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce’s New York wedding over the 4th of July weekend!
