Kendall College design students collaborate with DuPont to create real-life furniture projects

April 5, 2002—Student design projects from Kendall College in Grand Rapids, MI, will be featured at the Milan International Furniture Fair in Milan Italy from April 10-15, 2002. Four of the students submitted a design as part of the departments collaborative project with DuPont, and all four used DuPonts Hytrel in their design.

The collaboration with DuPont was the result of an ongoing dialogue between the marketing department at DuPont and Tom Edwards, Chair of Kendalls Industrial Design department. Each semester, Edwards develops a learning experience for the students that closely reflects the context of a real business situation by arranging for a company to sponsor the classs work.

Kendalls President, Dr. Oliver H. Evans, had long promoted the concept of teaching students that design and business must work together. The Collaborative Design seminar of 12 students from nearly all the major areas of study at Kendall, worked collaboratively to create the exhibit, design the graphics and develop the public relations tools to promote this project. Kendalls exhibit and student design work can be seen at the SalonSatellite division of the Milan Fair, in Pavillion 9, Stand L-17.
