Kentucky approves construction management restrictions on architects

The Kentucky Legislature recently approved H.B. 347, a bill that prohibits a local government from employing an architectural firm, or certain persons associated with the firm, to serve as a construction manager on a capital construction project for which the firm provided services.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the measure, saying that the management restrictions “adversely affect architects.” In the March 27, 2001 edition of AIAs Angle, AIA Kentucky Executive Director Janet Pike added that the bills passage shows the need for “architects [to become] more involved in the political process, especially on the local level.”
