KI’s ADD Sleep Chair and Perth Motion Patient Chair win Nightingale Awards

Two KI divisions have received healthcare product design awards. The ADD Sleep Chair, manufactured by ADD Specialized Support Technology, Inc., and the Perth Motion Patient Chair, manufactured by AGI, won Nightingale Awards in the Nightingale Product Design Competition. The ADD Sleep Chair also won Best of Competition.

The ADD Sleep Chair, designed by Roger Kenneth Leib, AIA, ACHA, is for guests staying overnight in a hospital room. A spring-assisted mechanism allows a quick change from chair by day to bed by night, with a single-pull motion and no loose cushions. Framed in heavy steel construction, the ADD Sleep Chair meets heavy-duty commercial standards and is backed by a 10-year warranty. Its caster system includes a lever mechanism and telescoping caster that allows the unit to roll from room to room, and then retracts to a static, stable position. Protective trim, either extruded vinyl or laminated wood, around the sides protects upholstery and resists damage when being moved. The waterproof, washable mattress adheres to all standard fire codes and is available in a full range of upholstery coverings and a choice of two protective armrest materials, vinyl or laminated wood.

The Perth Motion Patient Chair, designed by Daniel Cramer and Leib, has an integral therapeutic seat-and-back “rocking motion” that leans the patient into the lumbar support for comfort and posture that facilitates fuller breathing. The spring-resistance is designed to provide exercise benefits that enhance relaxation, circulation, respiration, and vistibular stimulation (the fluid in a patient’s inner ear is stimulated while being rocked, producing a calming effect). The patient’s feet stay on the floor, so that blood flow to the legs remains uncompromised. Available as a motion or fixed chair, with optional ottoman, the Perth Patient Chair has strong lines and a graceful, curved seat cushion, back, and arms.

The Nightingale Product Design Competition is sponsored by Facilities Design & Management magazine, The Center for Health Design, and Imark Communications. For more information and product photos, visit www.ki.com.
