July 10, 2009—KONE was awarded a contract to provide a mix of new installations and modernization to all elevators and escalators at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in the California. The contract covers maintenance, new installation, equipment repairs and upgrades in each of the eight terminals at LAX. The order was booked in the second quarter of 2009.
The project represents a significant investment by the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners to not only ensure that LAX is in compliance with all current health, safety and environmental standards, but to also provide dependable, and quality in-terminal transportation options for passengers and airport employees, says KONE. An estimated 59 million people travel through LAX every year, making it one of the busiest airports in the United States. Therefore, it’s critical that the elevators, escalators and autowalks work smoothly and efficiently to get passengers to their desired destination. The project is the first of four phases planned at LAX.
KONE will look to utilize energy-saving products that will help increase the overall sustainability of LAX’s current transportation systems. The modernization of the equipment will begin in September 2009 in Terminals 2, 3, 5 and 6. The project is estimated to be completed by July 2011.
