November 2, 2001—The Los Angeles Department of Water & Power (LADWP) recently ordered real-time electricity meters from Siemens Power Transmission & Distribution for more than 3,400 L.A. businesses. Once installed, the meters are expected to reduce as much as 240 megawatts of electricity demand.
The smart metering system—the first of its kind in the United States—is being provided to businesses at no cost and is estimated to reduce electricity bills by 15 percent. The program will empower businesses with the ability to profile, manage, and forecast energy loads in real-time, calculate bills in detail based on when power is used, and even monitor usage on the Internet.
The system is geared toward commercial and industrial customers with peak electricity demand of 200 kilowatts or greater. It should be completely installed by May 2002.
