Lawsuit alleges movie chains violate ADA requirements

National Amusements Inc. and Hoyts Cinemas Corp., two of the worlds largest movie chains, have been named as defendants in a lawsuit regarding possible violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The suit, filed by the Massachusetts US attorney in Bostons US District Court, alleges that the stadium-style seating in these chains theaters discriminates against individuals with disabilities.

This suit comes on the heels of a Texas lawsuit brought against Cinemark on behalf of movie patrons with disabilities, who claimed that the theaters wheelchair seating was uncomfortably close to the movie screen. Last April the 5th Circuit US Court of Appeals ruled in favor of Cinemark, concluding that the theater did not violate ADA standards that require wheelchair seating to provide patrons with lines of sight comparable to the general public.
