Local 94 operating engineers collaborate for office building security in NYC

March 7, 2003—Recognizing the critical role its members play as “first responders” in the event of a terrorist attack, International Union of Operating Engineers Local 94 have conducted an intensive Homeland Security Training Seminar designed to prepare members to deal safely and effectively with events such as the 9-11 terrorist attacks and other emergencies.

The initial training classes were geared toward those union members who work as operations and maintenance personnel in nuclear facilities, hospitals, government facilities, commercial office buildings and other public and private complexes throughout the U.S. Due to the success of the first collaboration, the need for certifying first responders, has been determined as a crucial first line of defense in the event of an attack.

Subjects discussed included: how to initially assess each facility to identify vulnerabilities; take preventive measures to correct identified deficiencies; react in the event of an attack, and restore facilities and operations following an attack.

Also discussed will be radiological, biological, chemical and nuclear hazards, and how best to react with regard to respiratory protection, personal protective equipment, and toxicology.
