April 15, 2002—The UKs Building Research Establishment (BRE) is to provide technical know-how for all the buildings-related aspects of the governments rejuvenated Energy Efficiency Best Practice program.
The EEBP program forms part of The Carbon Trusts drive towards a low carbon future, as a key element in the UKs response to climate change. BREs primary function is to maintain and develop the programs knowledge base on all aspects of reducing carbon emissions from energy use in buildings.
The contract was awarded by the Quantum Partnership, on behalf of DEFRA and The Carbon Trust. BRE will work alongside a number of other contractors who bring complementary skills to the program.
A new team is being formed to take this work forward, building on the past success of BRECSU which managed the buildings related aspects of the EEBP program from 1989. The programme motivates and promotes the spread of energy efficient technologies and practices throughout UK industry and the national building stock. To date this has saved more than 800m a year—equivalent to annual savings of over 5m tons of carbon.
