June 9, 2003—The London Sustainable Development Commission marked has launched the London Sustainable Development Framework to ensure all policy-making in the capital creates a better quality of life for Londoners.
The framework has been developed by the twenty-two commissioners who represent business, social, environmental, and corporate governance perspectives within London.
Among the frameworks objectives:
- Create equal employment opportunities for Londoners regardless of where they live. (Unemployment in Hackney is currently 16 percent, compared to 4 percent in Bromley.)
- Decrease income gaps between different ethnic groups. (Hourly earnings currently range from 12.11 per hour for white Londoners to 5.92 an hour for Bangladeshi workers.)
- Equalize life expectancies for people who live in different parts of the city. (Female life expectancy currently ranges from 79 years in Newham to 84.7 years in Kensington and Chelsea.)
- Improve the city’s air quality. (London’s air quality continues to be the worst in the UK and among the worst in Europe.)
