Louisiana-Pacific wins EPA award for waste reduction

October 28, 2002—Louisiana-Pacific Corporation, a partner in the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) WasteWise program, has been named a Program Champion for its waste reduction activities.

This distinction from the EPA recognizes LP’s concerted effort to educate its employees about environmental responsibility and to continuously improve its waste reduction programs.

LP is reportedly at the forefront of a natural balance approach to the wood products industry, having recycled 5.6 billion pounds of wood by-products, scrap metal, and plastics in 2001. LP’s corporate-wide waste prevention and recycling efforts included using more than 3 billion pounds of waste for energy recovery, and a 74.6 million pound reduction in total disposal volumes. This effort represented a 43% reduction from waste disposed in 2000.

The company also considers environmental impacts when developing new products, such as Cocoon cellulose insulation and TechShield radiant barrier panels. According to the company, both are environmentally smart and energy-conscious products that are made from recycled content materials.

LP is one of 53 organizations to receive an award at the WasteWise Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony. WasteWise is a free and voluntary partnership program launched by EPA in 1994. The program provides guidance and recognition to nearly 1,300 participating organizations working to find practical methods to reduce municipal solid waste and improve financial performance.
