November 29, 2002—The city of Takoma Park, Maryland, has just unveiled a 25-foot-tall urban grain silo as an alternative-energy measure to combat global warming, according to a report in The Washington Post. The silo will store 21 tons of organically fertilized, no-tilled corn to be burned in the corn-burning stoves that provide heat for the dozen homes of the Save Our Sky Home-Heating Cooperative. By switching from natural gas and electric heat to corn, the group expects to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 100,000 pounds over the next year.
