Massachusetts makes $100 million available for renewables

In an effort to promote production and consumption of clean electricity, the Massachusetts Renewable Energy Trust recently made $100 million available to support clean electricity generated from solar panels, wind turbines, and other renewable energy technologies in the state. Of that funding, $47 million will go toward programs to promote green power, green buildings, and premium power. The remaining $53 million will go toward grants to help 139 Massachusetts communities reduce their costs for pollution control equipment at waste-to-energy plants.

The trust, which is funded by a small surcharge on electric bills in the state, is operated by the Massachusetts Technology Park Corporation (MTPC), a state economic development authority based in Westborough. The funding, the first phase of a continuing initiative, is budgeted until mid-2002 when additional programs for the renewable energy fund will be developed.
