February 1, 2006—The BRE’s (Building Research Establishment) Loss Prevention Certification Board in the UK has announced that the McAvoy Group has become the first company to receive third party approval for its SafeSpace product to LPS 1195: Part 1, Temporary Buildings for Use on Construction Sites.
LPS 1195: Part 1 specifies the test and performance requirements for use of temporary buildings on construction sites at locations less than six meters from buildings under construction/refurbishment. The basic objective is to prevent a fire that has started in a temporary building from spreading to adjacent combustible materials, other temporary buildings, or to the building under construction.
A temporary building tested and approved by LPCB to this standard can be regarded as meeting the appropriate requirements of The Joint Code of Practice on the Protection from Fire of Construction Sites and Buildings Undergoing Renovation.
According to BRE, temporary buildings are widely used on construction sites as site offices, canteens and rest areas, etc. In order to deter arson and theft from these temporary site structures LPCB recommends that they also be approved to LPS 1175 Burglary Resistant Building Components, Strongpoints and Security Enclosures.
