April 3, 2009—Metic Group plc, a building systems and products group, has been appointed to design two prominent projects in London and Barbados.
In London, Metic has been chosen by Queen Mary and Westfield College University to work on a new Humanities building. Metic has also been appointed to provide a glazing solution for The Lanterns Shopping Centre development in Barbados.
The new Humanities building was designed by architects Wilkinson Eyre to provide state-of-the art facilities for students, staff and visitors through the use of an environmentally responsive building. The design was driven by the creation of a 300-seat auditorium that has been strategically isolated from the rest of the building for acoustic reasons.
Queen Mary and Westfield College University appointed Metic’s specialist architectural and engineering team to create the glazing elements, which include a large glazed window through which the auditorium will be visible from the road and a first floor glazed box. Metic will also incorporate digitally printed glass to create vision and obscuring panels and specialist acoustic glazing throughout the building, including the new main entrance.
Located in Christ Church, Barbados, the Lanterns shopping center is designed within an L-shaped configuration over two floors flanked by an open air colonnade. Metic will design the overhead skylight, incorporating design elements that will complement the center’s natural environment.
